چکیده

Subjects naturally integrate auditory and visual information in bimodal speech perception. To assess the robustness of the integration process, the relative onset time of the audible and visible sources was systematically varied. In the first experiment, bimodal syllables composed of the auditory and visible sy l l ab le s /ba / a n d / d a / w e r e present at five different onset asynchronies. The second experiment replicated the same procedure but with the v o w e l s / i / a n d / u / . The results indicated that perceivers integrated the two sources of information at all asynchronies. Cluster responses (for example, / b d a / given visual / b a / and auditory / d a / ) occurred primarily for the consonants but not for the vowels. In addition, cluster responses require that both the visual and the auditory information be reasonable compatible with the physical properties of a cluster articulation. For both vowels and consonant-vowel syllables, information from the auditory and visual sources is continuous, independent and combined in a three-stage process of feature evaluation, integration and

Assimilation of Final Low Back Vowel in Eghlidian Dialect

In this article, the low back vowel /A/ in word-final positions in Eghlidian dialect, one of Persian dialects, is studied. This vowel is represented phonetically as [A], [o] and [@] in different phonetic environments. Therefore many words were collected via interviewing ten native speakers so that these different alternant forms can be accounted for appropriately. Since one of the authors of th...

Vowel Similarity, Connectionist Models, and Syllable Structure in Motor Programming of Speech

Using a response-priming procedure, five experiments examined the effects of vowel similarity on the motor programming of spoken syllables. In this procedure, subjects prepared to produce a pair of spoken syllables as rapidly as possible, but sometimes had to produce the syllables in reverse order instead. The spoken responses consisted of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) syllables whose medial ...

Modeling Consonant-Vowel Coarticulation for Articulatory Speech Synthesis

A central challenge for articulatory speech synthesis is the simulation of realistic articulatory movements, which is critical for the generation of highly natural and intelligible speech. This includes modeling coarticulation, i.e., the context-dependent variation of the articulatory and acoustic realization of phonemes, especially of consonants. Here we propose a method to simulate the contex...

Surface Modeling of Vocal Tract Shapes in Transition Segments of Vowel-consonant-vowel Syllables for Estimation of Place of Closure

Production of vowel-stop consonant-vowel syllables involves movement of articulators from the articulatory position of the vowel towards that of the stop closure to that of the vowel. Movement of articulators before and after a stop closure is characterized by formant transitions. The closure portion of a stop have zero or low signal energy and relevant spectral information is not available. He...
